All children at Freegrounds Junior School will experience an inspiring, challenging and relevant high quality history education. Teaching will progressively develop pupils’ ability to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement.
Our history curriculum will enable every child to gain an understanding and knowledge of Britain’s, and the wider worlds, past. They will also develop an understanding of their own identity, which has been shaped by the past and the challenges of their time.
In History, the knowledge of periods, civilisations, events and key figures will be taught alongside the skills the children, as historians, will need for them to effectively evaluate and understand the past and how this can impact the present. In all year groups, there will be a focus on 7 key skills. These will be: chronology, characteristic features, continuity and change, cause and consequence, historical significance, historical interpretation and historical enquiry.
Whilst pupils are working, teachers use in-lesson assessment for learning to provide clear and direct feedback. In doing so, they respond and adapt their teaching as necessary for the class or individuals.
Throughout lessons, teachers seize opportunities to develop pupils’ team work, resilience, independence, creativity, critical thinking and reflective learning behaviours. This might be through task design or through questioning within the lesson. All children will engage with history and develop an interest and love of the past.
