Modern Foreign Languages

“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.” – Chinese Proverb.

Intent

All children at Freegrounds Junior School study French. This specific focus on one language, promotes substantial progress within that language. Our teaching of French aims to foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world whilst also equipping them with the skills and confidence to interact within it.

We aim to ensure that all children can understand and respond to spoken and written language; acquire useful vocabulary that will assist in real life situations; and help to develop an enthusiasm for language that will lay the foundations for future study. It is our intent that our pupils will develop the fundamental skills to consider themselves as ‘World Citizens’ who belong in a multicultural, mutually respectful world.   

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. We follow the 'Langauge Angels' scheme of work to support non-specialist teachers and ensure coverage and progression across the school. All of our children will have regular language lessons.

The teaching of French at Freegrounds Junior School builds upon the learning of French from our main feeder Infant School and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at KS3.

Implementation

All classes will have access to a high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in French through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in all year groups. 

Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.

The planning of different levels of challenge (as demonstrated in the various Language Angels Teaching Type categories) and which units to teach at each stage of the academic year will be addressed dynamically and will be reviewed in detail annually as units are updated and added to the scheme. Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch will be taught at all times to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language(s) they are learning.
