Maths

Intent

The National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, are able to reason mathematically and can solve problems by applying their mathematical skills. At Freegrounds Junior School, we aspire to embed these skills throughout maths lessons and learning journeys, and develop them consistently over time. We believe it is important to equip our pupils with a range of strategies to enable them to explain, reason and problem solve resiliently. Through appropriate challenge within lessons and additional opportunities outside of daily maths lessons, we aim for all children to master the mathematics curriculum as well as develop an enjoyment for the subject.

Implementation

At Freegrounds Junior School we follow a mastery approach to mathematics using the White Rose Schemes of Learning. Teachers use and adapt the schemes to meet the needs of the pupils in their class. The Schemes of Learning make sure topics are introduced to children in a logical order and are revisited throughout the year making links between domains to encourage deep learning and ensure children have the foundational knowledge they need, before moving on to more advanced maths concepts and tackling more challenging number problems. Through breaking the learning down into small steps, pupils develop mathematical fluency, reasoning skills and problem-solving throughout each learning journey. The use of multi-representations, concrete resources and sentence stems further support and enhance mathematical learning across all year groups and ability levels.

Within a mixed ability class, groupings are flexible in order to meet the needs of each pupil. Through the use of working walls and checking stations, children are encouraged to develop independence in their learning. Class teachers consistently use formative assessment techniques and summative assessments in order to appropriately support and challenge each pupil.

All pupils have logins to TT Rockstars and MyMaths in order to revise their learning at home, and as a school, we regularly promote special mathematical events such as: NSPCC Number Day and Barvember.
